Notice to all Shipowners, Fishing Vessel Owners, Agents, Shipmasters, Skippers, Fishers and Seafarers
The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport have been advised that the Marine Institute are decommissioning the wave energy test site in Galway Bay. The decommissioning will involve the removal of four cardinal marks and the establishment of a new special mark.
The “Chateau Thierry” (Callsign EIHK6) is scheduled to arrive on site between the 11th and 18th September 2017 to install the new Special Mark and remove the four Cardinal Marks. The duration of the operation will be approximately 2 days depending upon weather or other operational conditions. It is anticipated that the decommissioning operation will be completed on or before the 19th September 2017.
The location of the Galway Bay test site is shown in Figure 1 below:

The decommissioning operation will involve the removal of a wave monitoring data buoy from the site and the removal of the four existing Cardinal Marks located at the following co-ordinates:

The decommissioning operation will also involve the establishment of a new Special Mark to denote the presence of the Galway Bay Subsea Observatory on the seabed. The characteristics of the new Special Mark are included in Appendices 1 & 2 and will be deployed at the following coordinates:

The vessel involved will display appropriate lights and markers. The vessel will be broadcasting/listening on VHF Channel 16 during the decommissioning.

Notices to Mariners providing details of the changes to the aids to navigation including notification of works and impacts on navigation will be issued by Marine Institute.
Radio Navigation Warnings will be issued when the above changes to the aids to navigation take place.
