Williams and GAC Pindar storm through to Stena Match Cup semi finals
|
Alpari World Match Racing Tour Stena Match Cup, Day Five Update
Ian Williams and his GAC Pindar crew continued their outstanding form in the Stena Match Cup on Friday, winning their quarter final encounter against Joachim Aschenbrenner (Team Trifork) and making a promising start in the semi final against Francesco Bruni (Luna Rossa).
In his first race of the day Williams got off to a slow start in which Aschenbrenner took advantage to seal victory. GAC Pindar bounced back immediately with a narrow victory in the second flight and from then on it was all Williams, winning the next two flights in commanding style to win 3-1 and book a place in the semi final.
Williams made an early claim for a place in the final with victory over Bruni in the first flight, however he was red flagged in the second and unfortunately the penalty cost GAC Pindar the race. The semi final is now finely balanced at 1-1 and will be completed from 10.30am GMT tomorrow morning. The final is scheduled from 3.30pm GMT.
Williams commented: It was a good tie for us in the quarter finals and we were pleased to get through to the semis in such dominant form. If we can stay out of trouble with the umpires tomorrow then we should have a great chance of making it to the final once again.
