NOT The America’s Cup…. Breezy Start
The Taittinger Royal Solent Yacht Club Regatta (Friday 24th – Sunday 26th July 2015)
Between Friday 24th and Sunday 26th July, the narrow stretch of water separating mainland England from the Isle of Wight will be the focal point of international yachting. To the eastern end of the Solent, six boats will race off Portsmouth in the America’s Cup World Series and – potentially – the Duchess of Cambridge will wear an extremely elegant frock. At the Solent’s western extremity, around 180 boats will race in the eighth edition of the increasingly popular Taittinger Royal Solent Yacht Club Regatta off Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, and frocks – while universally admired - are optional.
At the 2014 Taittinger Royal Solent Yacht Club Regatta the racing fleet of over 170 boats included 60 IRC yachts with Peter Morton’s Salvo winning IRC Division 1 and scooping the overall regatta trophy, while Bob Fisher’s 1898 Fife-designed Mignon won the Classic IRC Class. This year, the Taittinger Royal Solent Yacht Club Regatta is once again part of the IRC Solent Championships and a healthy, diverse IRC fleet is anticipated. The IRC yachts will join the regatta’s traditional mix of classes including Swans, Contessa 32s, Gaffers, NHC Cruisers, Yarmouth One Designs (YOD), X One Designs (XOD) and – by popular demand – a new sports boat class for two days’ of racing in the Western Solent.
For competing crews, their friends and their families whose interests and real talents may be shore-based, the regatta will not disappoint with a range of entertainment at the Royal Solent throughout the weekend. The event is officially opened at the Champagne Taittinger Reception on Friday evening in the waterside grounds of the Royal Solent Yacht Club with the social highlight of the regatta on Saturday night at the charity fundraising Towers Party in John Calcutt’s waterfront property adjacent to the yacht club.
We look forward to seeing you at the NOT the America's Cup Regatta.....
Comments about The Taittinger Royal Solent Yacht Club Regatta:
Bob Fisher, yachting journalist and America's Cup historian said on behalf of himself and sailing partner Olympic helmsman Barry Dunning: “We had a lot of fun. Barry and I have not had this much fun in all the boats we have ever owned and this was a proper regatta. It was how you expect a regatta to be.”
Peter Morton (overall winner 2014): “Thanks for an outstanding weekend of racing in quite trying conditions. The team on Salvo really enjoyed the regatta (it always helps to win!); we really should race in the west more often.”
