Bronze medal for Swiss sailor Sébastien Schneiter at the Laser Radial Youth World Championship
The Swiss sailors concludes his Laser sailor career with his third world championship podium in less than a year!
The Laser Radial Youth World Championships took place in Oman, Mussanah Sport city, on December 29 - January 3. A fantastic set up, where the best youth Laser sailors in the world, spanning twenty nations, competed for the world championship title.

No less than eleven races took place, with wind conditions varying from 6 to 17 knots. In the boys category, Benjamin Vadnai, from Hungary becomes world champion whilst Italian Gianmarco Planchestainer finishes second and Sébastien Schneiter from Switzerland third.

Schneiter aimed for victory throughout the championship, and led towards the end of the event. Unfortunately, he got a black flag (disqualification due to a premature start) in one of the last races, which perhaps cost him the victory. Finally, only five points separate the first from the third and the world title has been disputed until the last race!

This is the third World Championship Podium for Sébastien Schneiter this season (ISAF Youth Worlds, Laser radial Open Worlds and Laser Youth Worlds); a remarkable achievement. He also finishes the season ranked number one in Europe (Radial class).

This is also the last major event in the Laser class for Sébastien, who will now move on to the 49er class with Lucien Cujean, aiming for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Four other Swiss sailors were involved in this championship, with David Biedermann finishing an excellent 13th, Max Haenssler 23rd, Arvid Nordquist 40th and Andrea Nordquist 20th in the female category.

Sébastien Schneiter made the following comment at the end of the championship: "After already two podiums at the world championships this year, my objective for this one was clearly the gold medal. Unfortunately, I could not reach my goal for only 4 points after a crazy week in very difficult sailing conditions. I regret my black flag in the ninth race a lot,, and even more so as I won the race. However, at the end, the result is still very good. This regatta concludes a very good season that was by far the best of my life and I am very happy and proud of my three 3rd place at three World Championships. "

David Deguine, his coach, added: "It was a great event with all sorts of conditions. It was very close throughout the week between all the sailors. Sebastien gave his best, and didn’t do too many mistakes; however, he missed some opportunities. This championship is closing up a great season for Sébatien, and a great career in the Laser class. I am proud of him. I am sure he will have a very good future in sailing with his talent. "
