A search is underway east of Eddystone Lighthouse for the racing yacht 'Clarionet' after Falmouth Coastguard received a 406mhz EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons), detection alert.

The yacht is taking part in the 'Myth of Malham' Race from Cowes to the Eddystone Rocks and back and has 5 crew aboard.

Falmouth Coastguard passed the incident to Brixham Coastguard as they believed after talking with the Race Control that the vessel was in Brixham's coastal area. The vessel had last made contact with the Race Control at 10.00am via text on a mobile 15 miles south east of Start Point.

Andy Cattrell, Watch Manager, Falmouth Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, said: "Brixham is currently coordinating a 55 square mile search east of Eddystone Light House.  The Coastguard Rescue helicopter from Portland has been scrambled as well as a Rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose. The Plymouth and Salcombe RNLI all weather lifeboats have been requested to launch. Numerous other vessels in the area are assisting in the search.

The weather conditions are favourable with easterly winds force 4, good visibility and moderate seas."
