UK. Coastguard and RNLI rescue children cut off by tide
Tuesday, 16 October 2007
At one o' clock today Aberdeen Coastguard received a call from the Police alerting them to three young children who had been cut off by the tide in South Kessock.
The children, a girl of 5 and two boys of 8, had been playing near the old ferry pier when the tide came in and surrounded them, making it impossible for them to reach the shore.
Aberdeen Coastguard called out the Inverness Coastguard Rescue Team and requested the launch of Kessock RNLI inshore lifeboat to the scene where it arrived within minutes. The children were then carried ashore on the shoulders of the lifeboatmen to be met by the waiting Coastguards and Police.
Hayley Morden of Aberdeen Coastguard said: "We are all aware that there are dangers associated with being close to the shore. Tides can come in very quickly and, as in this case, leave people stranded.
However, your children may not be as conscious of these hazards and therefore we would advise parents that if your children are playing on the shore that you keep a close watch on them at all times.
Remember that if you see anybody in trouble on the cliffs, coast, shoreline or out to sea dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
