Montecarlo (MON), August 25 2017 – This morning IMCOA 60’ Malizia II (MON) ended the Palermo-Montecarlo 2017. Pierre Casiraghi’s boat, which runs for Yacht Club de Monaco, reached the finishing line this morning at 10.29.40 in 2nd position, after the arrival of Lucky (USA) yesterday morning, who won Giuseppe Tasca D’Almerita Trophy.

The German skipper Boris Herrmann was satisfied and he said: “We did not find the right wind conditions for us – he reported just arrived – but it was an excellent and tough regatta. The Palermo-Montecarlo, with its nearly 500 miles, is a good test for sailors experiencing offshore competitions.”

Pierre Casiraghi received the crew at the quay: “I do my congratulations to the guys for the second position – he said –: it was not easy with these weather conditions, but they struggled all the time with character. Bravo!”.

Herrmann, the skipper, said a special thanks to Milena Schoenahl, who after the transfer of 2000 miles to reach Palermo from the Fastnet race, stayed on board for these further 500 miles, too. “On Malizia II there were present Herrmann, Milena Schoenahl, Matteo Marrenghi and Valentin Zavadnikov.

President of Circolo della Vela Sicilia, Agostino Randazzo, commented Malizia II result: “It’s a pity that this wonderful boat was not able to express all its power in this race: with different wather conditions the result might had been very different. I hope Malizia II will come back next year in Palermo to face a new challenger. At this stage I’m courious to know which boat will be the Angelo Randazzo Trophy winner in corrected time”.

Organised by the Circolo della Vela Sicilia in cooperation with Yacht Club de Monaco and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the Palermo-Montecarlo proves to be one of the most anticipated regattas of the summer. It’s the only one where the fleet, from the warm waters of Palermo and up to Monaco, sails up across the Mediterranean for almost 500 miles nonstop.

A total of 44 boats were at the starting line of the 13th edition on Monday, August 21st; 20 of them representing 9 foreign countries: United States, Monaco, Germany, Poland, Great Britain, France, Russia, Hungary, and Italy (with 24 participants). Six of them were Maxi boats but no way this year to break the record: 47 hours, 46 minutes and 48 seconds currently held by Esimit Europa 2, which set it in 2015.

The Palermo-Montecarlo wants to continue growing to be acknowledged as one of the leading high-sea sailing regattas in the world. It is currently part of the Offshore Championship of the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) and contributes in the awarding of the title with the highest coefficient. Furthermore, it has been confirmed in the IMA calendar (International Maxi Association) and it takes part in the IMA Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge 2017, the offshore race for maxi-yachts, which includes also the Rolex Middle Sea Race, the Giraglia Rolex Cup, and the 151 Miglia Regatta.

In addition, it contributes to give other international Trophies as Trofeo d’Altura del Mediterraneo 2017 and Championnat et Trophees Inshore et Offshore Mediteraneen Equipages-IRC 2017.

The success of the Palermo-Montecarlo rests on the contributions of different partners and institutions, starting from the City of Palermo which is the co-organiser of the event.

This edition has also received the crucial support of the Fondazione Terzo Pilastro-Italia e Mediterraneo and its President Professor Emmanuele Francesco Maria Emanuele. The Fondazione has always been active in promoting healthcare, culture, scientific research, education, training and social inclusion and its mission is to be a bridge between the cultures of the countries overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

An acknowledgment goes to Tasca d’Almerita which has been producing internationally prize-winning wines for eight generations and whose family has always been truly passionate for the sea as testified by their support to the Palermo-Montecarlo from its first edition.

New partners are Banca Mediolanum and Condorelli, together with Riolocar and Gesap.
