BUFFALO, N.Y. — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a 63-year-old male possibly in the water in the vicinity of Sylvan Beach, New York.

At 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Coast Guard Sector Buffalo received a report of an unmanned, adrift kayak. Once the kayak was located, keys, a wallet, and a cell phone were discovered inside the kayak.

The person suspected to have been paddling the kayak has been identified as a 63-year-old male from Wisconsin who was planning to kayak the Erie Canal.

A debris field, to include a tent and camping gear, was located near buoy 109 shortly after the search began.

A Coast Guard response boat-small crew from Oswego, New York, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, Michigan, and Canadian air assets from Trenton will continue searching throughout the night.
