Viking 62:  Komer's Roamer

In this Viking View, we take a close look at the other half of the Viking dynamic demo duo, the Viking 62, captained by Brian Komer. Like the Viking 72 (featured in our August 8 e-newsletter), the 62 has the industry-leading speed, range and seakindly ride that give her a razor-sharp edge over competitors - on or off the tournament circuit. "I love the size of this boat," Brian says of the 62, powered with twin 1,945-hp MTU Series 2000 V12 M96L diesels. "It's maneuverable and fast but also manhandles the seas. It feels like a much larger boat."

Brian says the demo's flying bridge, with its center console walk-around helm, gives him unobstructed views around the boat. "I have 360-degree visibility, and a bird's eye view of the cockpit," says Brian, seen here while fishing in last week's White Marlin Open out of Ocean City, Maryland. "I can have eyes on my anglers even while standing directly behind the wheel. The helm has the best electronics money can buy, packaged in a clean, streamlined console layout."

The Viking 62 has a Release Marine Trillion Series Fighting Chair, along with other valuable features like a crushed ice machine and mezzanine air conditioning. Teak covers the cockpit sole and mezzanine steps, heightening the boat's aesthetic appeal. The cockpit is as functional as it is pretty. Anglers appreciate its rounded bottom-edge coaming for comfort, ample toe kick for balance and high-grade nonskid for traction.

A Seakeeper 26 brings a level of stability to the boat offshore that ultimately improves overall fishing capabilities, says Brian. "I can fish in any sea condition. I'm not limited to straight up-sea and down-sea tacks - a lot of times I can fish in the trough, and that has proven to work for us."

Captain Brian says the four-stateroom, three-head sportfisherman gives you all the comforts of home - and then some. "Everyone loves the walk-around island galley because it's open to the salon, and you can get in and out quickly. Six guys can be milling about, but there's still plenty of elbow room."

Accommodations are second to none. Case in point: the climate-controlled forward guest stateroom's island queen berth has a custom innerspring mattress (with maple-lined storage beneath), a teak hanging locker (also maple-lined), a quilted designer bedspread and custom-embroidered pillows.

Like all Vikings, the Viking 62 (hull # 62405) is turnkey ready, equipped with a custom electronics package from Viking subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics and a hardtop and tuna tower from Viking's Palm Beach Towers. See the 62 demo at the Viking Dealer Meeting and Sea Trial Event, September 11-13, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
