Pierre Casiraghi and Boris Herrmann tackling the Fastnet

Monday, 07 August 2017

Cowes - Sunday 6th August 2017 – After an intensive week of regattas on GC32s in Palma de Mallorca where they finished 4th in the final ranking with two race wins, and equal on points with Esteban Gracia’s 3rd placed Realteam, there will be no holidays for Pierre Casiraghi and Boris Herrmann.

It is in the Solent, in a good south-westerly breeze that the two Yacht Club de Monaco sailors took the start at 11.10 am (local time), of the legendary Rolex Fastnet Race on the IMOCA 60’ Malizia II.

Ahead lies a 608nm course (1,120km) – the same since its creation in 1925 -  for the 384 boats on the start in Cowes, via the Fastnet lighthouse south of Ireland, before finishing in Plymouth.

It will be the first official fleet race for Pierre and Boris on Malizia II, after their Monaco-Calvi crossing for which they set a reference time. “Organised every two years, The Fastnet is a great classic, one of the oldest offshore sailing races. I’ve always dreamed of participating on my own boat. I’m looking forward to sailing as a duo with Boris. I think it will be physically tough as we will probably have many tacks before we round Bishop Rock (note : south west point of England). We should be reaching back to Plymouth which means many gibes also. Tactical choices will be determining. It will also be very instructive to see how we measure up against other IMOCA boats, this being the first time for us,” concludes Pierre Casiraghi.

Note that the 2015 edition has been won by Sébastien Col (team member of the GC32 Malizia), together with Vincent Riou on PRB. The time record on this race has been set in 2011 by the maxi-trimaran Banque Populaire V, skippered by Loïck Peyron, in 1 day, 8 hours 48 minutes and 46 secondes.
