The battle for the oldest trophy in international sports: The 35th America’s Cup live on Sky

Starting Friday, 26 May, Sky broadcasts all decisive encounters of the America’s Cup presented by Louis Vuitton live; live broadcasts are planned on up to 21 days total

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Jochen Schümann and Oliver Schwall are joining commentator Heiko Mallwitz as Sky experts

Unterföhring, 23 May 2017 – For the first time, the most famous sailing regatta in the world will be shown live on German TV in its entirety. Starting on Friday, 26 May Sky will be broadcasting when six teams battle for the oldest trophy in international sports for the 35th time at the America’s Cup. Apart from title holder ORACLE TEAM USA, five other teams fight in Bermuda for the cup that was first awarded in 1851.

Up to 21 live broadcasts are planned between 26 May and 27 June. With the exception of the opening on Friday (from 10 pm), the scheduled broadcasts are set for 7 pm respectively.

The live broadcasts include the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers (26 May. until 31 May and 2/3 June), the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs Semifinals (4 June and 6 June until 8 June) and the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs Final (10 June until 12 June), that are available for subscribers of the Sky Sport package on Sky Sport HD as well as via Sky Ticket.

The America’s Cup Match presented by Louis Vuitton, the final that takes place on 17 June and 18 June as well as between 24 June and 27 June, will be available free-to-air on Sky Sport News HD. In addition to the comprehensive live coverage, several highlight magazines will be aired throughout the event.

Heiko Mallwitz serves as commentator for all broadcasts. Jochen Schümann, the most successful German sailor of all times will join him on most broadcast days. The 62-year old Berlin native won Olympic gold in 1976, 1988, and 1996 and added a silver medal to his collection in 2000. In 1996, he became the only German to be recognized „World Sailor of the Year” so far, and he has already won the America’s Cup two times as sports director of Swiss team Alinghi.

The second Sky expert is Oliver Schwall. In the course of his illustrious career, the former Olympic athlete has won numerous bronze, silver, and gold medals at world and European championships. As a partner of Konzeptwerft GmbH (founded in 2009), he played a major role in the implementation of sailing projects such as Sailing Team Germany to promote Olympic and Paralympic high-performance sailing, the German Sailing Bundesliga as the first German club competition as well as the SAILING Champions League as the pinnacle of the 14 national sailing leagues in Europe over the last few years.
