Vendée Globe Race Update: Sunday 15th January

With just a few days of racing left in this year’s Vendée Globe,British sailor Alex Thomson is in second place, 108 nautical miles behind French rival Armel Le Cléac’h.

With 94% of the race complete, Thomson is crossing the North Atantic and sailing at a speed of 20 knots with 1488 nautical miles standing between him and the race finish at Le Sables d’Olonne, France.

The leading pair will be duelling all the way to the finish. The winds have increased from the South West in the last 24 hours, resulting in Thomson gaining miles on Banque Populaire over the last weekend of racing.

If Thomson wins this year’s edition he will be the first Briton to claim victory in this gruelling challenge, a race which to date has been won only by French competitors.
