Sport Relief Mile : Dee Caffari takes a break from the waves for a walk in the park

Monday, 19 March 2012

On Sunday 25th March record breaking British yachtswoman, Dee Caffari, will join over a million other people when she takes part in the Sport Relief Mile.  Sport Relief encourages the entire nation to come together to get active, raise cash and change lives by running dancing, jumping, skipping and fancy dressing their way around a 1,3 or 6 mile course.

Caffari, who has recently returned from Oman where she led the only all-female team in the Sailing Arabia – The Tour, will be down on the south coast taking part in the Southampton Mile. The event, which begins from Guildhall Square in Southampton, will guide participants on a route that will take in the scenic parks of Southampton’s city centre.

Ahead of the Sport Relief Mile event, Caffari said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Sport Relief Mile a couple of years ago and am delighted to be joining everyone again this Sunday. With there being such a focus on sport ahead of the Olympics, it is fantastic to have an event that is so inclusive. Taking part in the Sport Relief Mile is not about being in the peak of physical fitness, it’s about raising vital funds to change lives and the bonus is that you can have fun while you do it.”

However, ahead of the Sport Relief Mile it is looking like a busy week for Caffari. Tomorrow, Caffari will be representing tri service initiative, Toe in the Water, when she attends a special Freedom March by HMS Collinwood. HRH The Princess Royal will be present to officially open the newly upgraded West Street Play Area in Fareham to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

On Friday, and in her capacity as Ambassador for Toe in the Water, Caffari will be attending the boat naming ceremony for the charity’s recently donated Farr 52 race yacht. The boat will be renamed Toe in the Water at a ceremony to be held at the Joint Services Adventure Sail Training Centre (JSASTC) in Gosport. Following the re-naming, there will be no delay in putting the newly acquired boat to good use, as Caffari will be putting prospective volunteer crew through their paces the very next day at the charity’s annual crew selection event.
