Association news:
International Marina Institute (IMI), a subsidiary of the Association of Marina Industries (AMI), is traveling to Olympia, Washington, to bring its popular Intermediate Marina Manager program to the West Coast. The IMM class will be held at the Phoenix Inn from February 25 to March 1, 2007.
Calling it the “next logical step,” IMI representatives stated that their presence on the West Coast has been growing slowly since IMI’s inception in 1986. “Over the years, the demand for IMI courses on the West Coast has amplified,” says Gregg Kenney, AMI chair. “We’re responding to queries and requests from our members and those outside our membership to provide quality training across the United States, as well as Florida, Rhode Island, England, and Australia.”
IMI offers the Intermediate Marina Management (IMM) course as a stepping-stone to its Advanced Marina Management (AMM) school, scheduled for the week of December 4, 2006, in Florida, and again in late March in Rhode Island. Candidates must successfully complete the IMM course in order to enroll in the AMM school, which in turn qualifies one to obtain the coveted “Certified Marina Manager,” or CMM, designation. The two IMM classes scheduled for early November in Florida and England sold out, as well as the AMM program in Barcelona, Spain, in late November and the AMM program in West Palm Beach in December. IMI representatives urge interested students to register or apply as soon as possible.
As preparation for advanced studies in marina management, the IMM course covers marina-specific topics including marina law, contracts, risks and liabilities, staff management, fire- and emergency-response planning, environmental management, health and safety compliance, and the hot and timely issue of fuel-system management. The program also offers case studies and instruction from such experts in the field as former IMI director Tim Timpson, now of MarineResource LLC, University of Rhode Island’s Dennis Nixon, and Bill Yeargin from Correct Craft.
Class fees—includes lodging at the Phoenix Inn, breakfasts, lunches, and all course materials—are $1,695 for AMI members, and $1,995 for non-members.
The International Marina Institute (IMI) has been training and certifying marina personnel for over 15 years. Nearly 200 managers, representing some of the top marinas in the world, have successfully completed IMI’s Certified Marina Manager program. IMI courses and conferences span the globe, including Spain, Australia, New Zealand, England, and regions across the United States.
The Association of Marina Industries (AMI) is a non-profit membership organization that provides management training, education, and information about research, legislation, and environmental issues affecting the marina industry. |
