Company news:
Westport Shipyard has announced that it will expand its scholarship program by offering the Westport Shipyard National Scholarship, a new scholarship available to high school seniors who are children of any current Westport Shipyard employee.
The scholarship is part of Westport’s ongoing commitment to playing a leadership role in supporting workforce and educational development through the company’s diverse and sustained educational programs.
Since 1989, Westport Shipyard has offered the Westport Shipyard Scholarship to all high school seniors enrolled in the Ocosta School District. The new Westport Shipyard National Scholarship is an additional scholarship available specifically to children of Westport Shipyard employees at all Westport facilities, regardless of the school that the student attends.
Both scholarships are supported through Westport Shipyard donations to the Ocosta Foundation, a Westport-based scholarship foundation that awards academic, community service, need-based and vocational scholarships.
The Westport Shipyard National Scholarship will be awarded to seniors at any high school who will be graduating and enrolling as full-time college or university students.
“Westport is committed to offering the best educational opportunities to its employees and their families,” says Daryl Wakefield, president of Westport Shipyard. “Education is so important in the lives of our young people, and we are happy to play a part in making it easier for Westport families to afford the costs of higher education.”
To apply for the Westport Shipyard National Scholarship, students must complete an application form; submit two letters of recommendation, one from a school official and one from a member of the community; and write a brief essay stating educational plans, life goals and scholarship qualifications. Applications are due by no later than April 29 of the graduating year.
Scholarship applications are to be sent to Westport Shipyard, which will then forward them to the Ocosta Foundation for review and scholarship selection. Once a scholarship winner notifies the foundation of which college or university he or she will be attending, the Ocosta Foundation will forward the scholarship to that school. The scholarship must be used for tuition, fees, books or any other costs directly related to educational experiences. Scholarship amounts vary and are determined by the Ocosta Foundation on an annual basis.
If eligible, children of Westport Shipyard employees may apply for both the Westport Shipyard National Scholarship and Westport Shipyard Scholarship; however, only one scholarship will be awarded per student. |
