Lloyd’s Register held its most recent Hellenic Advisory Committee on November 2, 2006 in Mikrolimano, Piraeus. Some 30 key figures from the Greek shipping community attended, representing more than 34.5 million gross tons and 650 vessels.

The Lloyd’s Register Hellenic Advisory Committee is chaired by Captain Panayiotis Tsakos of Tsakos Shipping & Trading. Representatives from the Ministry of Merchant Marine (John Tzoannos, Secretary-General) and the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping (George Gratsos, President) and the British Ambassador Simon Gass were also present. Lloyd’s Register participated through the presence David Moorhouse, Chairman; Robert Smart, Head of External Affairs; and Apostolos Poulovassilis, Area Manager for East Mediterranean and Black Sea Area.

A range of commercial and technical issues were discussed, including: the development of the International Maritime Organization’s goal-based standards changes to the EU Directive on Ship Inspection and Survey Organizations (94/57/EC) human element challenges, such as attracting and recruiting Greek seafarers to the shipping industry review of Lloyd’s Register activities in Greece and design support capability the International Association of Classification Societies’ draft Unified Requirements for hull surveys during new construction pending amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), concerning performance standards for the coating of ballast tanks and cargo oil tanks amendments to SOLAS concerning lifeboat inspection requirements the relationship between shipowners, shipbuilders and classification societies.

Lloyd’s Register’s Hellenic Advisory Committee also re-elected Captain Tsakos as Chairman of the Committee.

Lloyd’s Register is the leading classification society in Greece, with a market share of 27%. In the 12 months from July 2005 to June 2006, some 1 million gt from Greek owners transferred into Lloyd’s Register class.
