Awards news:
Lewmar, a Hampshire based leisure marine equipment supplier, was today awarded the top prize at the prestigious DAME awards. The DAME prize is awarded annually to the best-designed product at the METS (marine equipment trade show) and it has become recognised world-wide as the leading competition of its type in the field of marine equipment and accessories. Other British successes include Henri Lloyd, the Manchester based clothing company, receiving a Special Mention and for Barrow International, Hampshire, which submitted an entry for a US firm – Seatorque Control Systems which went on to win the DAME category for machinery, propulsion, mechanical and electrical systems and fittings.
Lewmar’s One Touch Winch Handle was described by the judges as “elegant in concept, aesthetically pleasing, strong on detail design, well executed, effective and a great step forward.” Henri Lloyd was awarded a Special Mention by the judges who were delighted to see a marine company observe the different build of women in the design of their product – the TP2 Women’s Phantom Jacket.
These highly regarded industry awards were established to encourage improvement in the design of marine equipment, components and accessories by manufacturers. An independent jury selects an outright winner from seven categories and chooses entries that merit an Honourable and Special Mention.
The winners were announced as a record 168 British companies gathered at this year’s METS (Marine Equipment Trade Show) in Amsterdam.
Toby Allies, Director of International Development at the British Marine Federation congratulated the companies saying, “The British leisure marine industry is world renowned for its innovation and quality of design. We are thrilled that Lewmar and Henri Lloyd, who are excellent ambassadors for the industry, have been recognised by these prestigious awards. This is a great start to one of the most important events on the leisure marine calendar and the BMF is looking forward to working with the British exhibitors to make the most of the opportunities available at METS over the next few days.”
Phil Atfield, Sailing Market Manager, Lewmar, added “We are delighted that our product has been recognised at the international DAME awards. It is a huge tribute to the skills, dedication and forward thinking approach of the whole team based in Hampshire.”
The British Marine Federation is the trade association of the leisure marine industry in the UK. It project manages the UK pavilion at METS.
