Coast Guard news:
The unified command responding to the grounded Kristin Poling tanker in East Rockaway Inlet successfully managed to free it from grounding with a tugboat at 12:07 a.m. here yesterday.
Approximately 298,200 gallons of #2 home heating oil were transferred to a barge in preparation for high tide.
The tanker was successfully refloated and is currently enroute to New York City.
Although Coast Guard pollution response officers reported that the ship suffered no apparent hull breach and no oil entered the water the barge will be further inspected to ensure safe operations.
The unified command deployed a total of 20,000 feet of oil recovery boom, 10 vacuum trucks, 10 oil skimmers, 20 workboats, 45 contractors and over 70 people working throughout the unified command to ensure that no damage was done to the natural resources in the area.
Local mariners should take special precautions when operating their vessels in and around the Rockaway Inlet and the Reynolds Channel due to predeployed booming equipment in the area.
The results of this operation are a perfect example of how diverse agencies and the private sector work together in a unified command, said Captain Peter J. Boynton, Coast Guard Captain of the port of Long Island Sound.
The incident is under investigation. |
