Servane Escoffier has the morale of a Route du Rhum winner. The previous leader in her class, Vedettes de Bréhat – Cap Marine, has been overtaken by Kip Stone, who had been ahead of Servane, but she is still focussing on clinging onto the American and making 12 knots average speed.

The young woman from St Malo is very determined and says “I’ve only had 3 hours sleep in 48 hours, but I’m not going to let up. I’ve had a few little technical problems, but I’m pretty handy with a tool kit. Less than two hours into the race, I had to work on the autopilot, then I had a small water leak on the engine to fix, but I coped. The worst moment was when I wanted to change to a smaller foresail and the larger got jammed and I was left coping with a series of events that led to a crazy gybe, which resulted in a broken mainsail batten, but never mind I fixed it, as you nearly always can when you try hard.”
