Early this morning, race leader Bernard Stamm made a decisive bear away to keep his reaching speed on Cheminées Poujoulat at 15 knots and is now heading south-east, 180 miles west of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Kojiro Shiraishi took Spirit of Yukoh close to Madeira last night, but is now 60 miles south of the island, keeping pace with Stamm.
As Alex Thomson predicted yesterday, Mike Golding has pulled away slightly from Hugo Boss and Ecover is currently 64 miles ahead as the pair reach parallel to the coast of Portugal with Thomson closer to the coast, 90 miles west of Lisbon. Tonight, both Golding and Thomson will be at the same latitude as the Straits of Gibraltar, racing through the busy commercial shipping lanes at the entrance to the Mediterranean.
On Friday morning, Unai Basurko and Graham Dalton started racing from Bilbao. Basurko had returned to his home port to repair and replace sails destroyed in the violent Bay of Biscay gale last Monday and Tuesday. Dalton is starting the VELUX 5 OCEANS fresh, having remained in Bilbao to continue work on his Open 50, delaying his race start for five days. Both skippers are beating west along Spain's northern coast, Basurko's Open 60, Pakea, furthest offshore leading Dalton's smaller fifty-footer, A Southern Man - AGD, by just seven miles.
In La Coruna, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston delayed his restart yesterday to continue with vital system checks and repair work to his Open 60, SAGA Insurance. Knox-Johnston plans to join the six other yachts on the race course within the next few hours
