81 year old James Bertakis is in a critical, but stable, condition after undergoing heart and lung surgery following an attack by a stingray.

Unlike the attacks that resulted in the deaths of "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin and the 14 year old Italian boy Michele Arnulfo V, earlier this year, this attack was not an accident whilst swimming. Bertakis had taken his 18 foot boat out on the Intracoastal waterway and was cruising near his Lighthouse Point, with his two adult granddaughters, when an Eagle Ray jumped into the boat. When Bertakis tried to push it back into the water, the creature stabbed him in the heart and lung with its tail barb.

Despite the injury delivered by the one metre “wing span” fish, Bertakis remained conscious and was able to steer the boat to his landing stage, where the police were called.
