Jodie Perkins:
Finalist nominees and Awardees for Excellence Awards 2006 were announced however, following recent events there are some additions to those already announced.
2006 Star World Champions, Hamish Pepper and Carl Williams join the list of finalist nominees for Sailor of the Year. They also receive a combined Merit Award.
Rohan Lord and Miles Addy will also receive a combined Merit Award following their impressive performance in San Francisco at the Star World Championships.
Two others join the list of Honour Awards for 2006. Irv Bigwood of the Bluff Yacht Club was surprised by the news from fellow club members that he was to receive an Honour Award, and support for him to attend the ceremony in Auckland has apparently poured in
Irv and his wife will attend the YNZ Excellence Award Ceremony, says the Club after an item in the local news paper we have had offers of travel and accommodation donations pouring in to date 3 to cover total cost and after a whip around at the Club flight payment from us. As one member said, it shows the calibre of the man.
Tony Thompson of the Bay of Plenty Trailer Yacht Squadron also joins the list of Honour Awards nominated by his Club for his significant contribution to Blind Sailing.

Background
The Yachting New Zealand Sailor of the Year Award and recipient of the Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy began in 1963, with Harry Highet receiving the first prestigious award. The standard of recipients has continued on until the present day with previous winners including Olympic Gold medallist boardsailor Barbara Kendall and Aaron McIntosh, Team New Zealand, Sir Peter Blake, Brad Butterworth and Russell Coutts among other many outstanding yachtsmen and women. The Young Sailor of the Year Award recognises our future champions while individuals of merit who have contributed to the sport as administrators, officials and cruising sailors are also recognised through Honour, Merit, and Cruising Awards.
The Awards are traditionally presented at New Zealands premier yachting dinner of the year - the Annual Yachting New Zealand Excellence Awards dinner, where these outstanding nominees gather together with their families, peers and the sailing community to celebrate the years achievements and recognise the wonderful volunteers working behind the scenes in the sport.
