Michelle Dunne:
Complementary dates and a great mixture in terms of location and format are promised in the list of major national and regional cruiser racing regattas just released by the Irish Cruiser Racing Association (ICRA) for the 2007 sailing season.
The Dublin to Dingle Race, Saab ICRA National Championships, Sovereign’s Cup Regatta, West Coast Championships, Dun Laoghaire Week, and Calves Week are the headline regattas. The organisers of these events have worked with ICRA to ensure that the dates will not only not clash but also provide an action packed three month programme offering a variety of racing styles.
The Dublin to Dingle Race kicks off the programme on June 10, giving the competing sailors a chance to hone their offshore racing skills and take in the spectacular views of the East and South coasts. The fleet can then travel back to Cork for the Saab ICRA Nationals, to be hosted next summer by the Royal Cork Yacht Club from June 22 to 24. Then a few days later, from June 27 to 30, and a few miles down the coast the magic cruiser racing waters that lie between the Sovereign Islands and the Old Head beckon for the four days of racing and partying that is the highly successful Sovereign’s Cup Regatta sailed out of Kinsale.
For those who have the stamina this can be followed by a leisurely cruise over west to Clifden in the heart of glorious Connemara for the West Coast Championships to be held from the 4th to 7th July.
The fleet returns to Dublin Bay for the huge Dun Laoghaire Week from July 12 to 15.
August brings the fleet and the holidaymakers to West Cork for Calves Week, racing between Schull and Baltimore from 3 to 12.
Commenting on the programme, ICRA Commodore Fintan Cairns praised the clubs and event organisers for having worked together to achieve an array of dates and styles. ‘Its great to see the co-operation that has gone on amongst the organisers of these events. Free time is at a premium, and this programme should be of assistance to sailors in planning their summer ’.
Anybody who has experienced an Irish regatta is always tempted back. Next summer’s schedule should entice even more foreign sailors to bring their yachts and crews to Ireland to compete in a multiple of events. Organisers of each of the individual events will announce details later this winter.
