Barcolana press:

There are 822 participants up to now (update at 18) in the Barcolana. Four days to go: the regatta will take place on Sunday 8 October at 10. The big are coming to Trieste, where the waterfront is filled with boats moored a few steps away from piazza dell'Unità d'Italia.

"We missed both the Barcolana and Trieste" said Neville Crichton, owner and skipper of Alfa Romeo, who has already won twice in the Barcolana (2003 - 2004).

"We are ready to clinch the third victory - said Crichton -

and we are coming to Trieste determined and strongly motivated after our triumph in the Maxi Rolex Cup of Porto Cervo. We have already sailed against Maximus in Sardinia, our rival in Trieste, and we won, but every race is a different story. Both maxis have the potentials and the technology to sail in an exciting way".

Alfa Spider Match Cup: Croatian team holds lead after four races, Mascalzonz Latino second

Today the first European RC44 races have been held in Trieste. The Alfa Spider Match Cup has started, an event created by Russell Coutts that will continue until Saturday. In the first day of races with south-west wind between 6 and 10 knots, 4 fleet races have been sailed by the world's first five one design yachts RC44, owned by Russel Coutts, Mascalzone Latino shipping magnate Vincenzo Onorato, Japanese Isao Mita, Croatian Miroslav Reljanovic and by the Triestine Fabio Apollonio, Riccardo Gratton and Marino Quaiat.

Croatian Miroslav Reljanovic dominated the races, helmsman able to win three times in the first, third and fourth races, while Russel Coutts beat the Croatian team in the second race showing all his excellent yachting ability on a course 4.8 miles long near the coast.

Mascalzone Latino, skippered by Matteo Savelli, has shown good manoeuvring capacities and team work and came in twice second, third and fourth in today's races: Onorato's team is second in today's overall standings. "The first day has been a great success" - said Russel Coutts at the end of the races. "All teams are top level and according to today's results, victory can be still clinched by any of the boats, while RC44 confirm to be fast and spectacular".

This is the overall standing at the end of the first four races of the Alfa Spider Match Cup, (three best results):

1 Cro-a-sail 3 (1,2,1,1)

2 Mascalzone Latino 7 (2,3,2,4)

Tomorrow Vodafone Barcolana Music and Barcolana Classic

While the sailing appointments during the week before the Barcolana are already underway, tomorrow the concerts of the Vodafone Barcolana Music and Barcolana Classic, dedicated to some of the most prestigious historical boats, will start.

In piazza Unità d'Italia, at 21.30, the first of the three concerts in program will be that of the Afterhours, one of the most original bands of Italian alternative-rock. Sixteen years of experimentation and transformation, led the group of Manuel Agnelli at the top of Italian bands, playing from rock to hard-core.

On Friday it's Giuliano Palma &The Bluebeaters' turn and on Saturday the coveted concert of Elisa who will sing for the first time in piazza Unità d'Italia. Just before her performance, she will meet the press to let people know how much she feels excited about the Barcolana.

Twenty "ladies of the sea" will participate in the historic, classic and spirit of tradition boats gathering, organized by the Società Velica Barcola Grignano together with Y.C.Adriaco.

Famous boats will berth in Trieste: a cutter, Sorella built in 1858, who sailed in the first regattas held in Britain, and the Bat designed by Carlo Sciarelli. Other renowned boats will be present, for instance Roberta III and Moya, and some types that are loved in our Gulf, from the Nibbio, typical "caiccio" launched in 1921, always present in the Barcolana, to Nababbo II, faithful reconstruction of one of those Passeras from Losinj sailed by thousands of sailors, among which Tino Straulino.

Among the many wonderful boats, you should admire Aria, an elegant 8 metre hull that was restored in a "philological" manner and Galeb, the six metre boat on which the famous Slovenian ballet dancers Pia and Pino Mlakar, star of Zurich theatre, have cruised for sixty years to the Incoronate before donating the boat to the sea museum of Piran. Among the many curiosities there is Vertue XXXV, an eight-metre hull on which in 1950 British Humphery Barton crossed the Atlantic at a speed of 3. miles per hour and Jardine, on which in 1982 Alessandro Sternini sailed round the world. Isabella and Angelica IV are among the most beautiful boats designed by Carlo Sciarelli, who died recently and to whom this edition is dedicated.
