Coastguard news:
An extensive search is underway for a missing 88 year old man who had gone on a walk from Wembury to Down Thomas via Heybrook Bay.
Devon and Cornwall Police informed Brixham Coastguard at 10:20pm on Tuesday that they had a report of a missing person at 7:30 p.m. and requested their assistance in the search. The casualty was believed to be 88 years old and from Plymouth. It was known the casualty had parked his car at the Wembury beach car park, where he started his walk. The casualty managed to inform the police by mobile telephone that he was stuck in thick undergrowth after a bull had chased him in a field, since then there has been no successful communication with the gentleman.
The Police had carried out a search of the area and two helicopter searches using FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared).
Brixham Coastguard sent Plymouth, Yealm and Tamar Coastguard Rescue teams to the scene to carryout a land search which is being jointly co-ordinated with South East Devon Sector Manager. A request to scramble Rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor has also been made by the Coastguard. Also on scene are Dartmoor Rescue and Devon and Cornwall Police.
Fiona Iris, Watch Manager, Brixham Maritime Coastguard Co-ordination Centre, says: "The search has now been underway a considerable amount of time, we are all very concerned for the welfare of this gentleman.'
