Conservation news:

Pennsylvania residents in 25 counties will benefit from a more than $11.7 million investment in conservation and recreation projects that are designed to help revitalize communities and protect natural resources, Governor Edward G. Rendell said today.

"This investment will help us preserve and enhance the tremendous opportunities we have in Pennsylvania to connect with the great outdoors," Governor Rendell said of the 68 projects that will be funded. "Across the state, we are investing in local parks and greenways, trails, rivers and open space conservation because we know these assets are what help keep families healthy. They also make our communities economically vibrant and great places to live, work and play."

Funding for the grants comes from Growing Greener II, a voter-approved $625 million bond issue, and Keystone '93, a DCNR fund generated from a portion of the realty transfer tax.

Statewide, the grants will fund a variety of projects including the acquisition of land or conservation easements for 3,732 acres, and 17 planning projects for regional parks, greenways and rivers conservation. These grants also will continue the popular river sojourns that increase public awareness about rivers and watersheds and provide training and education to municipalities about Conservation by Design planning concepts.

The largest grants are $1 million to Berks County for acquisition of 560 acres including Antietam Lake in Lower Alsace Township, Berks County, and to the Natural Lands Trust for the protection of three properties totalling 261 acres in Newlin Township, Chester County.

Growing Greener II funding is used to clean up rivers and streams; protect natural areas, open spaces and working farms; and shore up key programs to improve quality of life and revitalize communities across the commonwealth.
