Coastguard news:

Falmouth Coastguard is currently co-ordinating a search around Mullion, North of Polurrion Cove, for a man who is believed to have been knocked off his yacht following huge sea swells and bad weather last night.

The yacht was at anchor in the area last night. This morning Coastguard Rescue teams tried in vain to contact the yacht by VHF radio and shouting from the shore.

Falmouth Coastguard then requested the launch of the RNLI all weather lifeboat from Penlee, the RNLI crew boarded the yacht and discovered that it was empty, but the outboard engine was still running and the owners belongings were still onboard.

Falmouth Coastguard immediately requested the Mullion and Porth Leven Coastguard rescue teams to begin a shoreline search. The RN rescue helicopter from Culdrose was scrambled and the RNLI all weather lifeboat from Lizard was also launched to the scene. The RAF rescue helicopter from Chivenor is now also on scene using its FLARE camera to assist in the search.

Falmouth Coastguard Watch Manager, Peter Bullard, says: We do not know when this man fell overboard but with the technology available to us we have a search area mapped out. Conditions are currently favourable with good visibility and we will continue to search for this man using out Search and Rescue resources until all Search areas are covered
