Lindsay Lyons:

To the relief of the organisers, Day 2 of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Autumn Regatta dawned clear and bright, with a northerly 9 knots of breeze. The Cruiser fleets were first off from the Hung Hom start line, with Frank Pong’s Jelik quickly pulling away from the rest of the fleet on its way to scoring yet another line honours victory.

The first race of the day featured a few OCS calls, with Sam Chan on Noisy Forefather failing to return on the FF15 start and Colin Smith’s Nicopol ignoring the second gun on the Etchells start. By mid-day, however, the breeze was becoming patchy and many competitors found themselves becalmed just short of the finish line, however all classes managed to finish within the prescribed time limits and returned to Hung Hom for the start of the final Race.

The wind strength had lapsed to 5 knots by this point, and Race Officer Gideon Mowser primed his team to shorten courses for the majority of the fleets. Close competition in the Sportsboat fleet saw Steve Bourne on Merlin take three firsts on the water and on corrected time, equalling Jelik’s IRC tally for the regatta. Other classes were more open, with most of the prizes being decided on the last race of the series.

A total of 86 boats participated over the course of the weekend, the best turn out for some years partly due to renewed support from the Dragon and Cruiser fleets. After a number of threatened protests evaporated on the way from the Pontoon to the Sailing Centre, the Protest Committee had an evening off and a rowdy prizegiving ensued, with the Commodore’s wife, Ms Jane Dudok van Heel, presenting the prizes.
