Company news:

RYA Sailability has been made the chosen charity for leading manufacturer of sailboat hardware and accessories, Harken UK. To celebrate the new partnership, Lymington-based Harken has held a party for 150 clients and friends, raising £500 for the charity.

Harken is also supporting the Artemis 20 project, a state-of-the-art dinghy designed to allow able-bodied sailors and those with disabilities to compete alongside each other in the same boat.

Harken's managing director, Andy Ash-Vie, said, "The very fittest able-bodied racers in the world use Harken because it works and makes sailing easier. They don't have to fight with the boat - they race the opposition. Some older boats used for disabled sailing do not have the same equipment and its time they did! I look forward to working with RYA Sailability on many future projects to 'Give the Gift of sailing'."

Sailability's managing director, Debbie Blachford, said, "Corporate support for RYA Sailability, not only financially, but also through donations of products, equipment, and time, is helping us to transform thousands of lives. We are delighted that Harken has joined the growing number of businesses to choose us as their charity. We are sure Harken's staff will get as much satisfaction and pleasure from this relationship as the sailors they are helping."

Party time for Sailability - two bands and a full-size Scalectrix kept the fun going to the early hours at Harken's fundraising party for the charity.

Editors note:

RYA Sailability is the charity which helps as many people with disabilities as possible to enjoy the sport of sailing. There are currently more than 16,000 sailors with disabilities in the UK, as well as 12,000 volunteers and over 200 sailing clubs with adapted facilities and boats.

Founded in 1995, RYA Sailability was recently incorporated into the Royal Yachting Association and has their full support and use of all services. The Trustees of the Charity have an ongoing fundraising programme running alongside grant applications and fund-generating projects. Corporate and personal donations, however, remain vital to help the organization continue developing the support it gives sailors with disabilities. Also invaluable are the volunteers and their families who give their time to assist with travel, teaching, training, manning rescue boats and fundraising. RYA Sailability is the centre of expertise for sailing clubs who want to get involved, advising on accessibility, training, safety issues, specialised boats and equipment.

RYA Sailability also encourages corporate employee involvement in their volunteer teams. Tailor-made training programmes can be designed to help create a corporate culture that enables businesses to meet the demands of the Disability Discrimination Act.

It is intended that the Artemis 20, a Rogers Yacht Design, will reach Paralympic status by 2012.
