Strangford Lough Yacht Club is the venue next weekend (September 2nd and 3rd) for the biggest youth sailing competition of the RYANI year.

The championship is part of a scheme developed by RYA to give youngsters a chance to experience high quality racing in a well organised environment. Coaches and the RYANI High Performance Manager, Bill O’Hara will be looking for indicators for the prestigious Youth and Junior squads.

Some of Northern Ireland’s best young sailors will be competing. Among them will be thirteen year old Oliver Loughead who finished 10th, and 1st Irish sailor in a huge 81 boat fleet at the Topper dinghy class World Championships on Lake Garda and fourteen year old Chris Penney of Carrickfergus Sailing Club who came 4th out of a fleet of 263 boats at the Topper British Nationals at Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy. He also grabbed the runner up slot in the Topper Irish National Championships. The Murphy brothers, Theo, Matthew and Rory from Quoile YC will be formidable competitors and among the girls, Irish Youth Academy member, Kylie McMillan of Strangford Lough YC will be raring to go after her 23rd slot in the Laser Radial Worlds.

Racing will be in Lasers, Mirrors, Toppers and Optimists with the first warning gun at 10.55 am. Sponsors are the personal watercraft specialists, Wet and Wild.
