Claudio Chiarani:

Aussie Katie Spithill, sister to James (Luna Rossa’s helmsman) is trying to repeat on Lake Ledro’s waters the same successes achieved by her brother, who made it to the America’s Cup.

After winning eight out of eleven matches (defeated only in the clashes against Leroy, Hayes and Ulrikkeholm), Katie is proving that the pure art of holding the helm is a family affair. Nevertheless, it will be difficult to oust from the podium French skipper Claire Leroy (who is world no. 1 and won 9 out of 10 matches). Leroy fell in a very fortunate match for the Italians, as she was defeated by Sabrina Gurioli. But the fight is far from over. Tomorrow, at the end of the second Round Robin, it will be official which crew will be competing for the podium of this Trentino Match Race.

The two Italian contestants are not unworthy. Gurioli files her winning run against Leroy (and climbs the ranking by winning six out of eight matches). Mariani, on the other hand, won three and lost eight. Leroy, Spithill and Hahlbrock are most likely to be the ones battling for the podium. But Italian Gurioli and English Gemma Farrel (no. 2 in the world Ranking) are not far behind.

Tomorrow, the crew will take to the water at 10:00am for the third “flights” session.
