Ian Grant at Airlie Beach:
Thrill seeking Whitsunday Sailing Club catamaran skipper Peter Millar will defend his 4MK Great Whitsunday Fun Race trophy on his favoured Pioneer Bay course on Saturday.
Millar and his Spud Gun crew created history last year when they became the smallest yacht to win the drag race over a triangular type course completing the race with the exceptionally fast 13.93 knot average speed.
Spud Gun has since been given a paint cut and polish which will add to her speed when she lines up against a high standard fleet of local and interstate rivals off Airlie Beach this weekend.
The promise of a fresh trade wind forecast promises to propel the speed sailing Spud Gun to a record breaking course time.
She went close in the relatively light 10-15 knot breeze last year and her improved sailing speed combined with less friction resistance from her highly polished hulls and stronger winds will give the Spud Gun crew an excellent chance to win line honours with the fastest time ever recorded in the 30 year history of the race.
Skipper Millar and his crew of fast lane sailors were happy with last years result but would have had better reason to celebrate with a faster time.
However sailing 14 n/mls in 56 minutes is no mean feat and that time will be taken into a new time zone when they chase the 14.47 knot average speed record off Airlie Beach on Saturday. |
