Tropical storm Ernesto has gained strength as it has come back over water and the Florida east coast hurricane watch now extends northward to New Smyrna beach and includes Lake Ocheechobee.

On the west coast the hurricane watch is in effect from Bonita Beach southward and includes all the Florida Keys, from Ocean Reef to the Dry Tortugas. It is expected that the hurricane watch, for this area, will be upgraded to a hurricane warning later this morning.

At 0900 Zulu, the centre of Ernesto was about 230 miles southeast of Key West and moving northwest at about 14 mph. It is expected to reach the Florida coast this evening, but squally rain bands will occur from mid afternoon. Isolated rainfalls, of up to 15 inches, are possible over the southeast of Florida, with coastal flood surges of up to 3 feet above normal tide levels.
