Coastguard news:

Yarmouth Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public on Skegness beach at 1.50 pm this afternoon. The caller reported that his friend was struggling in the water off the end of Skegness pier.

Yarmouth Coastguard paged Skegness Coastguard Rescue Team and Skegness RNLI Inshore Lifeboat, and RAF Rescue Helicopter 128 was diverted from a routine exercise to the area. Upon arrival at the scene, the Inshore Lifeboat crew recovered the teenager - who was in the early stages of hypothermia - from the water. He was then transferred to the shore, where he was taken by air to Boston Pilgrim hospital for further checks.

Jason Jones, Yarmouth Coastguard Watch Assistant said: "This could have been a tragic incident but for the quick thinking of this young man's friends and the excellent response from the resources involved. We urge all beach users no matter what their level of confidence in the water to take sensible precautions when swimming in the sea, particularly in offshore winds. This young man could very easily have lost his life today but for the dedication of our volunteer crews, the RNLI and their RAF counterparts."
