Sunseeker Sales Group has announced its involvement in the Powerboat P1 World Championship. Team Sunseeker will make its P1 debut at the British Grand Prix of the Sea, taking place at Cowes, Isle of Wight, over the August Bank Holiday. This initial race for Sunseeker Challenger will herald the team’s entry into the entire Powerboat P1 World Championship series in 2007.

The Powerboat P1 World Championship attracts some of the world’s most talented powerboat racers and is a fresh, dynamic lifestyle sport where great skill and daring is demonstrated on water as they take on the might of the open seas in a series of closely-fought endurance races. The decision, by one of the world’s major production brands, to enter this prestigious and exhilarating racing series, further extends the geographical spread of the championship beyond its traditional Italian base.

Sunseeker Sales Group will enter – in the SuperSport Class – its Sunseeker Challenger, the race version of its formidable XS2000 model. With a proven race track record and high performance Yanmar twin diesel engines, the revolutionary Sunseeker Challenger is extremely well placed to compete alongside the many leading boat and engine manufacturers that are represented in the Championship.

Nathan Knight, CEO of KBL Powerboat Management Ltd, organiser of the Powerboat P1 World Championship, is delighted that Sunseeker Sales Group has joined the Championship. “This is another highly significant development in the evolution of P1 and the culmination of 18 months of discussions. Sunseeker is a global lifestyle brand, renowned for the quality and performance of its products. Team Sunseeker will add a new dynamic to the Championship and we welcome their participation. It is another sign that major marine and non-marine brands understand and are attracted by the platform we are creating.”

Sunseeker Sales Group has selected a highly experienced and professional team to represent them and to be ambassadors for both the brand and the Powerboat P1 World Championship.

Team Sunseeker comprises Team Manager Mel Wilby, who has a wealth of racing experience having competed in over 80 races since 1991; Driver Andy Wilby, who by trade is a McLaren technician and has a flair for powerboat racing and has competed as driver in every National race since 2000; Throttleman Gavin Brown, whose expertise is in high speed powerboat rigging and has held a powerboat racing licence since 2001 and Chief Engineer, Tony Davis, a marine engineer by trade with a specialist knowledge of marine engines, sea trial and navigation.

As one of the major powerboat brands to be competing in the Powerboat P1 World Championship, Sunseeker Sales Group Managing Director, Dominic Byrne, is very proud of the company’s representation in one of the fastest growing motorsports in Europe. “Powerboat P1 combines spectacular action with the glamour of international powerboat racing and therefore offers the perfect platform for the Sunseeker brand, which is synonymous with lifestyle and performance.”

Team Sunseeker will make its Powerboat P1 World Championship debut in Cowes on 26th and 27th August as part of the Powerboat P1 British Grand Prix of the Sea.
