In 2005, the Gilles Ollier Design Team and Multiplast were awarded the small craft medal by the highly prestigious UK Royal Institution of Naval Architects. “In recognition of the design, development and construction of high performance composite multihulls.”

In part II of BYM News’ article on Multiplast, chief designer Giles Ollier talks about what makes a successful Round the World record breaking boat; carbon fibre building techniques; Orange II compared to Club Med and PlayStation; canting keels, cats versus tris and more.

The Tour de France ŕ la Voile takes place around the same time as the more famous cycling event, but the one to watch for in the peloton is the red spinnaker, not the yellow jersey! There are other differences too, like classes for amateurs & students and inshore races at the various stopovers. All the boats are Mumm 30s.

The 2006 event attracted 80 entries; most were French, but there were also competitors from Mauritius, Switzerland, Italy and Holland. BYM News’ Aldous Grenville-Crowther asked VanUden TUDelft skipper Gert Van der Heljiden how a Dutch team got involved?
