Celeste Johnson: The 2006 Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac results are in and the major winners of the Trophies have been declared. Eagle was the outstanding overall Mackinac Cup winner for the 2006 Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. It claimed its third divisional title by four seconds, winning the trophy and setting a precedence. The Sydney 38, skippered by the O' Neill father and son team, not only won the overall trophy but were also the first to arrive in their section and first in the IRC Overlay division. Thrice winners, Mac Chairman Bob Smith declared this a record for the Chicago Yacht Club Race.. Chicago Yacht Club members Jerry O'Neill and his son Shawn, survived Monday morning's storms to finish first with an adjusted time of 43:28:01. "We hit it good," Shawn O'neill said. "We had one good broach, but everybody stayed on board." O' Neill says the team was spiritually in sync and it was a joy to sail with friends who know each other so well that each time a tactical decision was made there was never a doubt. Jerry O'Neill claimed another divisional title in the 1970s. Smokum Too, a Canadian team from Thronbury, Ontario took the Chicago-Mackinac Trophy Cup with a corrected time of 42 hours, 46 minutes, and 13 seconds. This was their first time sailing the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. Multihull honors went to Gamera, a 27-foot F25C Yacht from the Midwest Open Racing Fleet with a corrected time of 44 hours 24 minutes and 25 seconds. The Royono Trophy, given to the first monohull to finish was won by the largest boat in the fleet, Windquest, a ZMax 86 yacht skippered by Tom Geisler and his 18 man crew. Windquest clocked in with a time of 34 hours, 43 minutes, and 23 seconds Windquest broke a record in the Bacardi Bayview Classic out of Port Huron Michigan earlier this month.
