The Portuguese flagged classic megayacht, Cardigrae VI sank this morning in the harbour of Saint Maria di Leuca, where she had been anchored since last night, after being towed in following a fire on board.

There are now concerns that the 6000 litres of diesel oil and 100 litres of lubricants on board could escape and pollute this tourist area. The Gallipoli harbour authorities have started operations to contain any pollution.

It is believed that the fire was caused by a short circuit and that, because it burned for almost 10 hours, the yacht’s hull was weakened, which led to it sinking.

Some of the firefighters suffered from smoke inhalation, but none are in a serious condition.
