Coast Guard news:
U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan will provide security for the 2006 Tall Ships Challenge on Lake Michigan once the event makes its way to host ports Green Bay and Chicago between July 27 and August 9.
The Tall Ships will visit four major ports on the Great Lakes including Cleveland, OH July 12-16, Bay City, MI July 20-23, Green Bay, WI July 27-31 and Chicago, IL August 3-9.
An elite boat crew unit, the Harbor Patrol Detachment Chicago, comprised of reservists from Station Calumet Harbor, will provide safety and security throughout the entire event.
The Tall Ships Challenge® Race is a series of sailing races, cruises, crew rallies and maritime festivals organized by the American Sail Training Association (ASTA) in conjunction with the sponsor cities on the Great Lakes, the Pacific and the Atlantic coasts of North America. Race legs will take the ships from Cleveland, OH towards the mouth of the Detroit River and from the Sturgeon Bay Canal, WI towards Chicago, IL.
Approximately 22 ships are scheduled to venture the challenge. The public is invited to tour the ships, meet the crews and learn about the many opportunities to sail and travel on ASTA member vessels during the visits at each host port. |
