Coastguard news:
The Unified Command, consisting of U.S. Coast Guard, state and company representatives, continues to oversee the recovery and cleanup operations resulting from waste oil that spilled into the Christina River Saturday evening.
About 2,100 gallons of waste oil entered the water after it was released during transfer from one tank to another at the International Petroleum Corporation of Delaware, operated by U.S. Filter, a subsidiary of Siemens Corporation.
Following the product release, boat crews deployed containment boom to limit the spread of the oil and deployed absorbent boom to soak up the oil. In all, about 6,000 feet of boom of various types was deployed.
About 75 people took part in the initial response with more than 100 people working today.
Waste oil can best be described as used oil, most often from automotive service stations, that may be collected and processed to be re-used as an industrial fuel.
The impact of the spill stretches five miles from the mouth of the Christina River to the Interstate 95 overpass. The stretch of affected area has rainbow sheen and pockets of waste oil ranging from thick to sporadic.
Tri-State Bird Rescue has been called to help coordinate efforts to capture wildlife reported to have been oiled by the spill. There have been reports of 15 birds oiled by this spill.
The following public information phone numbers are being provided: individuals with personal property believed to be damaged because of the spill can contact (888) 749-8344, ext. 201, to submit a claim citizens who find oiled wildlife should not touch the animals and should call (302) 737-9543 people who wish to report sightings of oil should contact (800) 662-8802
