Coastguard news:

On Sunday 16 July, a Coastguard patrol from Bridlington was approached by a man carrying his young son in a very distressed state. The family from Hull had just arrived at Bridlington South beach when the boy stood on a hot coal from a discarded barbeque.

The boy was taken to the nearest first aid facility and then to hospital by ambulance.

Dave Hardy, Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Officer said: "Beach goers are reminded that discarding hot coals from barbeques onto the beach is totally irresponsible. The coals are easily covered by loose sand, and would present a hidden danger to the unsuspecting child or adult, and severe burns could be inflicted with lasting damage. We would ask that, bearing in mind the scorching weather we're currently enjoying that any coals are carefully discards responsibly and safely.

"Of course, further back from the beach, headland grasses, gorse and heathers are tinder dry at the moment, and we are also concerned to keep down any incidents of grassland fires which could put other beachgoers and walkers at risk."
