Fishing news:
First-time author and avid outdoorsman Mike DiLorenzo draws on his passion for fishing and creates a uniquely styled book titled, "Adventures with Jonny, Let's Go Fishing!" to lure children and their parents to the sport.
"All my best memories and favorite adventures have been in the outdoors," said DiLorenzo. "When I noticed that there weren't very many children enjoying fishing, I felt compelled to help change that statistic by developing a character that children could relate to and emulate."
A Three-Part Adventure
In the first section of the book, DiLorenzo's amusing storyline piques the interest of children, ages 3 to 8, as they venture out with Jonny and learn what a day of fishing is all about.
The second section is a "How-to" fishing guide for parents to ensure their children start off on the right foot as they walk into the world of fishing. It identifies the necessary equipment to pack, the easiest rigs to use, the proper casting techniques and where to find the fish.
The third section of the book, called "Name That Fish," provides families with a game that will educate them on how to identify the most common freshwater fish. Beyond learning the identity of each fish, they also will learn what each fish likes to eat, where the fish live and how to catch each species of fish.
The book's final pages are designed as a journal with spaces to record the dates, places, tackle used, types of fish caught, and the people who went fishing.
Adventures with Jonny
DiLorenzo hired Canadian illustrator Jenniffer Julich to collaborate on his first book venture. Julich brought the characters to life based on the input of several hundred metro-Detroit students at Hugger Elementary, the school attended by DiLorenzo's three children.
"The students helped us determine the look of Jonny's every feature," said DiLorenzo, whose 9-year-old son, Jonathon, is the inspiration for Jonny. "They were brutally honest about every detail which we were grateful for in the long run."
The Adventure Continues
DiLorenzo is writing a series of books which will take Jonny and several new characters on a variety of outdoor quests. Eventually, Jonny will grow into a young teen and more sophisticated storylines will accompany the transition.
This fall, the second book, titled "Adventures with Jonny, Ice Fishing, the Coolest Sport on Earth!" will be available. It follows Jonny, his father and a few new faces as they pursue perch and pike through the ice.
"Fishing is not a sideline sport," said DiLorenzo. "Fishing is about parents and children sharing a thrilling experience that helps build longstanding family bonds."
