Company news:
Leading electronic safety equipment manufacturer McMurdo has received a prestigious order to supply the United States Navy with the EPIRB technology for the innovative S-EPIRB - a Submarine Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacon.
The S-EPIRB, which operates much like the standard EPIRB on the 406MHz emergency frequency, but is deployed under water and activated upon reaching the surface, has been delivered to a number of the world’s navy’s by McMurdo’s US partner Ultra Electronics. This collaboration has enabled both companies to combine their individual areas of expertise to develop a high tech. market leading solution.
Director of Marketing Jeremy Harrison stated “The order from the US Navy is a benchmark for the success of McMurdo’s specialised technology.” He explained: “McMurdo initially contributed to the development of the S-EPIRB eight years ago, applying our extensive EPIRB solutions to submarine fleets. The product has already been supplied to the Italian, Canadian, Brazilian, Israeli and Swedish Navies, which indicates that it is firmly established on national defence safety inventories”.
Like McMurdo’s standard maritime and terrestrial survivor location products the S-EPIRB transmits a distress signal on the 406.025MHz frequency which uses the COSPAS-SARSAT system to alert search and rescue services in the event of an incident. It features a GPS receiver for accurate location and a 121.5MHz transmitter. The S-EPIRB is supplied as a standard bulkhead electronics module. Final casing and activation switches are specified by the individual customer. |
