Fas-Dam, a private engineering company specialising in flexible cofferdams, is to build one about 500 feet long, to salvage the 48 metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Legacy. The operation, which was scheduled to start today, is expected to take several weeks.
The Legacy, which has been valued at $13 million, was driven into shallow seagrass beds, off the Florida Keys, by hurricane Wilma and has remained there ever since, whilst officials and owners have held discussions about safe guarding the environment.
The salvage plan, filed with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, by FAS-DAM involves erecting a cofferdam around the Legacy and filling it with sea water, so that the yacht floats and can be moved to the end of the dam. This will then be dismantled and re-erected to repeat the operation, until the vessel reaches deep water.
The decision to use this method to salvage the yacht is because experts say it will cause least additional damage to the seagrass beds, which have already suffered some destruction because of the Legacy’s grounding. After the salvage, the yachts owners will work with the Sanctuary to restore the damaged beds. |
