Nadja Arp / Mareike Guhr:
She was visibly happy about her victory in the Laser radial class: Wiebke Schröder from Berlin saved the first place not only in the Olympic women’s discipline, but defeated all men in the fleet of 150 boats as well. "The wind conditions have been very tricky, but I like these ups and downs, and had a good run", said Schröder, winner of the Europa Cup.
Petra Niemann came to Warnemünde as the favourite of her class, but said farewell with a lot of new experiences instead of a title from her first Warnemünde Start.
"I will see the start as training for the upcoming Worlds", she said. The Laser Radial World Championship starts end of July in Los Angeles/USA. "In L.A. I want to sail into the top three", Niemann announced.
In the Olympic Laser Standard class the winner of the Europa Cup after seven races is called Rutger van Schaardenburg from the Netherlands, followed by Dmitry Bondarenko from Russia and Hannes Holländer from Hamburg/Germany. The long time leading Vasilij Zbogar from Slowenia became sixth in the end, because he left for the Europeans in Poland on Monday and did not start in the last two races.
The sport boats class began their European Championship today with a fleet of 20 crews from seven nations. After three races the Italian "Gullisara"-Crew helmed by Alessandro Durante underlined their ambitions to win the Championship with three firsts on day one.
The Folkeboat is usually a rather slow keelboat. But the class showed signs of hurry on their second day of the German Championship. "They all very hot about racing, so we had to try five times before we got the fleet to a proper start. And with the black flag up, eleven boats had been disqualified for being over early and had to watch the first race of the day from far", said race officer Jens Merda. After three races Bernd Schädlich from Kiel is leading the Championship.
While the one design classes had to wait for wind, two big and spectacular keel yachts started for the round Bornholm record. At 11 o’clock in the morning the two V.O. 60 "Mac Arosa" (Ex-Illbruck) and "Rostocker" (Ex-Toshiba) took off for the 270 mile leg around the Danish island. Two crew members from "United Internet Team Germany" jumped onboard "Mac Arosa" for the record run. But in these slow winds, the record is very unlikely to be broken, even with the help of experienced Americas Cup sailors.
On Wednesday the participants of the long distance race (40 yachts started already on Monday) are expected to be back. The Folkeboats, Sport boats and Dyas continue their racing and on Thursday the Olympic Tornado class will begin their International German Championship. In the second half of the Warnemünde Week, 12 more classes will sail for the titles in the Baltic.
