Nadja Arp / Mareike Guhr:
High temperatures made sailing difficult on the third day of the 69th Warnemünde Week and the sailors had to suffer in the summer heat today.
Mostly slow and shifting winds make a record for the round Bornholm race unlikely. Tomorrow, the last races of the Laser Europa Cup will start.
A lot of patience was needed, before a thermal breeze build up in the afternoon and made racing possible in Warnemünde. But the spectators enjoyed the sunshine.
Wiebke Schröder from Berlin leads the Olympic Laser Radial class before the last and deciding races will be sailed tomorrow. In the Olympic Laser Standard class, Vasilij Zbogar from Slovenia only had to give way to the French sailor Mathieu Murati today, but still leads overall after five races. But together with his sparring partner Alan Julie from Seychelles he will pack his Laser and travel on to Gdynia/Poland tomorrow, to start in the European Championship from Thursday on, and therefore will not start in the final races.
In two groups, the keel yachts started in the morning to sail the 270 nautical mile long course around the Danish island of Bornholm. On Tuesday the V.O 60 yachts "Rostocker" and "Mac Arosa" will follow the fleet. "When the weather does not change, the record is very unlikely to be broken", said race officer Iris Groß. The Round the Island record is set by of 28 hours and 37 minutes.
On course Alpha the Beneteau 25 class sailed their last race today and said farewell to Warnemünde. Joachim Hellmich and his "Revoltosa"-Crew scored victory after eight races. They left Reinhard Hübner and his crew on second place, followed by Kai and Uwe Mares. "We want to become World Champions", announced Hellmich their big plans. The Worlds start end of September in Vigo/Spain. "Warnemünde was a very good experience and it is a perfect training ground", he added.
In the 420 class the Beilken brother from Bremen had their revenge. "We did not qualify for the worlds, but won here against crew that will go to Gran Canaria to sail the Worlds", Alexander Beilken said. "We have a new mast, which is much better, and we now aim for the Worlds 2007 in New Zealand".
Hans-Christian Hassemann from Schwerin/Germany with crew Moritz Rojek
(Hamburg/Germany) followed on second place and Maximilian and Caroline Weiss from Munich became third in the 50 starters.
Thomas Paasch from Denmark sailed lonely at the top of the A-Cat class and won the series after eight races. "Warnemünde is great, and the beach is very nice. Only the wind was a bit slow this year, but I am very satisfied, because I could win five of eight races", Paasch said.
Tomorrow the Sportboats and the Olympic Tornado class will start into the Warnemünder Week with the measurement day.
