Paolo Martinoni:
First day of semifinals today in Valencia with a breeze from the south east at 8-10 knots. Race one against Alinghi kicks off at 3 p.m. From the start Francesco de Angelis and his crew want and defend the right. At the gun Luna Rossa crosses the line on the Committee boat end to windward of Holmberg. Up the first beat the wind shifts to the left and Alinghi opens up the lead rounding the top mark with a 22 second margin. Down the run Luna Rossa begins the chase and gains 7 seconds on her opponent. Alinghi pulls away up the beat with the wind having shifted to the right and increases the delta to 23 seconds at mark three. Once again Luna Rossa attacks closing the gap on the run, but at the end Alinghi wins by 15 seconds.
The second race for the Semifinal begins at 5 p.m. Luna Rossa enters from starboard. Both helmsmen vie for the right once again and after sailing into the spectator fleet aim for the start. James Spithill crosses the line on the Committee boat end. Alinghi calls over early and is forced to restart trailing by 33 seconds. Five minutes into the race Luna Rossa has a lead of 175 meters. Alinghi closes in reducing the distance to 23 seconds at the top mark and 13 at the leeward gate. A good second beat sees ITA86 eking out by 21 seconds and on the final run Alinghi and Luna Rossa go off on opposite sides of the course. Lateral separation reaches 600 meters and on the left there is more pressure. Alinghi passes in the command and wins the race with a final delta of 29 seconds.

Format of Valencia Louis Vuitton Act 12
The formula for Act 12 anticipates the format which will be used in the Louis Vuitton Cup next year. Based on the ranking at the conclusion of the Round Robin the twelve teams will be grouped in three divisions: 1st to 4th, 5th to 8th and 9th to 12th. The first of each division will select its opponent from the same group for the Semi-final Series. The Semi-finals and Finals will determine the final scoreboard of Act 12 (best of three formula). The first division will award positions 1 through 4, the second positions 5 through 8 and the third positions 9 through 12.
