Jo Taylor:
Team Caffari is set to make its competitive debut in the Big V Sail from Portsmouth to Cork starting July 10th. The team was assembled by adventurer and sailor Dee Caffari to continue the quest for new challenges and combine her passion for offshore racing with desire to inspire others to achieve their dreams.
As a result the Big V boat, a Kensington Mortgages branded Farr45, will be crewed by experienced racers and novice sailors taking part in Dee’s Confidence by Caffari programme.
Dee will be in Portsmouth to see the boats off at the start of the first ever Big V Sail and present in Cork to host the prize giving ceremony. She has backed the Big V Sail to be a big success and tipped her own team in the process.
Dee Caffari said: "The Big V Sail is a fantastic new event. As well as getting everyone up to Cork, it fills a real gap in the calendar in terms of competitive, mid-range offshore racing.”
Dee continued: “I am delighted that Team Caffari is now a reality and that it will debut at the Big V Sail. Our aim is to continue to inspire people through sailing and give novice sailors a chance to experience just how exhilarating offshore racing can be. I will be at the start to see my team off in our boat, sponsored by Kensington Mortgages, the specialist mortgage lender. I will then go onto Cork where I will be on prize giving duties. I am looking forward to seeing if people can keep up with Kensington and Team Caffari!”
Dee Caffari set a new world record on 18th May 2006 when, after 178 days at sea, she became the first woman to sail round the world, non-stop against the prevailing winds and currents.
The Big V Sail is being organised by Virgin Money, the innovative insurer behind Big V Cancer Insurance, which launched earlier this year. The Cork Week feeder race is open to all classes and will be recorded by the World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC), so the winning crew will set an official World Record for the Portsmouth to Cork race.
Trevor Field, Marketing Director for Virgin Money said: “It is fantastic to have Dee Caffari on board for the Big V Sail. Dee is an inspiration to everyone in the sailing world and I know she will be very warmly welcomed both in Portsmouth and Cork. We’re delighted to have Team Caffari involved too for what is shaping up to be a very competitive race.”
Virgin Money is supporting the Everyman Male Cancer Campaign and all proceeds from the Big V Sail will go to Everyman. Crew taking part in the Big V Sail will also be encouraged to raise at least Ł100 each in sponsorship. |
