Hanne-Marie Bense:
Kiel Sailing City, …..today it was a pleasure to take part in the Olympic Classes races on eight courses; the perfect wind conditions on the outer race areas Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta offered South Westerly 16 – 21 knots, on the inner courses near Schilksee same direction 11 – 15 knots. Air Temperature reached only 16 degree Celsius, so the competitors sailed fast and challenging races and individual “heats” without freezing in the North European summer.
The RS X OL-Board M and W fleets had 3 exciting and quick races, and the lead is still in the hands of 1. M. Oberemko, UKR (8 points overall), 2. M. Woycik, POL (8 points) and 3. M. Martin, GER including one discard after 7 sailed races. East European boardsailing women keep the lead in the RS X OL-Board W fleet: 1. O. Maslivets, UKR (12 points), 2. M. Hlavaty, POL (17 points) and 3. R. Kinzl, GER, (23 points).
In the 2.4 Paralympic Keelboat Class Frenchman Samien Seguin held his superb lead, he won both today’s races (4 points overall), followed by Thierry Schmitter, NED as 2nd (8 points) and Heiko Kroeger, GER, (10 points) who did not reach yet his top-form on his home waters.
32 teams in the 470 W fleet sailed 3 more races today, the overall points with one discard after 7 races follow: 1. Elise Rechichi/Tessa Parkinson, AUS (11 points), 2. Oliveira Fernanda/Isabel Swan, BRA (19 points), 3. Kathrin Kadelbach/Saskia Schroeder, GER (22 points). The tight lead in the 470 M class is kept by the Australian team M. Belchere/N. Behrens (12 points), just in front of 2nd placed Dutch brothers Sven and Kalle Coster (13 points) and the 3rd team overall S. Fantela/I. Marenic, CRO (16 points). The Croatian team had to retire in today’s 5th race.
Tornados on the rough “Stollergrund” area “flew” over the course and sailed 2 more races today. Here again the Australian coach’s hard work proved to make the “Aussies” taking the lead in this another Olympic class: 1. D. Bundock/G. Ashby, AUS (5 points), 2. F. Echavarri/A. Paz, ESP, (14 points) and 3. T. Rivas/F. Escude, ESP (16 points) after 5 races. The best German Tornado team – Roland Gaebler/Gunnar Struckmann who won a Bronze Medal in Sydney, today placed 7th overall (30 points). At one stage 3 German Tornado teams capzised in a heavy gust and had a short dive into the rather cool water on the Baltic Sea.
Dan Slater, NZL still leads the Finn fleet (8 points after 4 races), followed by J. Hoegh-Christensen, DEN (9 points) as 2nd, and Marin Misura, CRO in 3rd place (13 points).
The weather conditions challenged the Star Class competitors quite well; however, none of the competition could limit the success of the “shooting stars” and yesterday’s leading team Robert Scheidt/Bruno Prada, BRA, - they scored 9 points overall after 4 races. 2nd team was F. Marazzi/E. Huter, SUI (14 points) and 3rd the “newcomers” from Germany R. Stanjek/F. Kleen (17 points).
Petra Niemann, GER is the only German DSV squad competitor leading in one of the Olympic classes, the Laser Radial W. After 6 races, four of which she won, she scores 6 points overall with 1 discard. 2nd overall is at present Wiebke Schroeder, GER (17 points) and 3rd Mateja Petronijevic, CRO (29 points). The 170 entries containing Laser fleet sailed 3 races in 3 groups and following teams scored important points including one discard: 1. Michael Blackburn, AUS (14 points), sharing even points with 2. A. Geritzer, AUT, (14 points/ winner of the Olympic Silver Medal in Athens 2004). and 3rd placed V. Zbogar, SLO, (again 14 points).
The fleet sailing in the 49er Class resulted Pietro and Gianfranco Sibello, ITA sailing in 1st place (8 points); close on their heels are the Danes Jonas Warrer/Martin Kirketerp as second (13 points) and third placed are Gabriel Wicke/Wolf Jeschonnek, GER with 16 points overall/1 discard.
After completion of a minimum of 5 races within the first 2 days, Kiel Yacht Club Race Manager Jobst Richter is positive in launching the newly invented “Finals” in all Olympic Classes coming Sunday. The top ten after about ten qualifying races will be sailing a final on the last day and thus determine the winner of the Kiel Week 2006 medals among them. The scoring of the final counts double and its’ result may not be discarded. – The remaining fleets of each Olympic Class will continue to finish their series on Sunday, thus determining
the results from 11th onwards.
