The battle for final leg honours took place in light airs, but was no less gripping for that, as Pirates of the Caribbean and ABN AMRO Two fought for the final victory in the Volvo Ocean Race. Peter Gustafsson was on the water, to capture the atmosphere & excitement for BYM News and his pictures are in the Volvo Ocean Race album in the BYM Photo Gallery, with more in team albums.
This morning it was announced that there would be a new course for the next Volvo Ocean Race, which could encompass ports in the Middle East, India, Asia and the west coast of the USA. Since then, there has been speculation about both course and starting port, especially as Volvo Event Management CEO, Glenn Bourke, said that the start host had “magnificent facilities”. Some took this to hint at Valencia, in Spain, and the America’s Cup Village, which will have become redundant by 2008. Others suggested Quingdao, in China, whose new marina will have been vacated by the Olympic Games, by late 2008 when the next Volvo Ocean Race is scheduled to start.
Favourite among the speculators is, however, a Middle East starting point and one thing most agree on is that it is unlikely that the next Volvo Ocean Race will include rounding Cape Horn! Who is right and who is wrong remains to be seen, but one thing seems certain; this has been the last Volvo Ocean Race that will closely follow the traditional route of round the world races and record breaking attempts. |
